Hi.

Mixers and Measure

Mixers and Measure

I've had a Whoop on for three plus months now.

It's be a fascinating three months with Whoop. Initially, I was wearing it for measurement, the data and the curiosity I had for what implications might be in the data. Then it became more interesting to see the impact of alcohol on sleep on different nights. Woah. It's more profound than I had any idea it could be - based on my experience and data. Hydration has a strong impact as well. How knew? Drink up - water that is.

Then I began to test different types of Alcohol's impact on sleep - for example, based on recovery scores, wine has less impact on sleep for me than Scotch. Of course, because I'm measuring it I'm also likely modifying behavior - even when I started out thinking that I'd just live and see what the data said.

I dropped Alcohol for a month, a week ago, to do some testing on sleep. It's not getting better, yet, by the way. But onto Mixers.

Last night I wanted a mental signal for the weekend, like a glass of wine or beer can do to say it's time to transition from the work week. I needed to find a Non-A version. That was a new problem.

Some friends of ours had recently moved and I had these "extras" in the cupboard from their generosity. So, on with the experiments. A little soda water and a lime and a broken ice maker filled with store purchased ice and we were off to the Friday night Non-A races. Time to welcome the weekend.

Seedlip
It's a distilled Non-A spirit from the UK that comes in three versions. We used the Garden 108 last night. It goes a bit like a gin. It's also just OK with soda water. It presented “medicinally” on my pallet.

With Company Cocktails
It's a cocktail mixer out of Nashville. We had the Hey Girl which runs a bit like a cucumber infused water, but thicker. It's got way more flavor and was a touch better than OK with soda. It presented a with a bit of complexity which was nice compared to the medical presence of the first one.

Ultimately, we mixed 'em both together with some lime and soda. That was the ticket for the night. The Seedlip as a “gin” and the WithCo for the mixer. Welcome weekend, in a new way.

A note on Whoop.

The Will Ahmed, Whoop CEO, interviewed Kernal CEO, Bryan Johnson formerly of Braintree Payments. Turns out he's taking a similar measurement approach Whoop has for bodies but for brains with the start up Kernel. That is already fascinating as a concept and they seem to stand a great chance to build something quite useful for optimizing brain space and function based on their initial efforts. Add them to your measure and mix repertoire.
